Porsche lifts lid on its secrets

Special exhibition at Stuttgart HQ shows off concepts, prototypes and rarities from Porsche's past.

If you're a Porsche fan and you fancy seeing some of the company's rarest cars, then you've got a few months to get yourselves over to Germany for a special exhibition.

'Project: Top Secret!' opens this week and will run until January 11, 2015, featuring a display of 16 unique vehicles that - for the most part - have never been seen by the public.

Among them are secret concept cars, camouflaged prototypes and one-off record, test and experimental vehicles created by the engineers sequestered away at Porsche's Weissach development centre.

Some of the highlights include: a 1973 sustainable car research project codenamed FLA; a Type 995 experimental passenger car; a world-record holding Porsche 924; an aerodynamic prototype of the 959; a 928 Cabriolet; the Roadster Type 984 concept car; a 965 prototype that has a water-cooled, rear-mounted V8; a forerunner to the Panamera in the shape of the 989; and a prototype based on a 964 Targa that was used to test the mid-engine concept for the Boxster. It really is a Porsche anorak's dream.

Anything else?
Project: Top Secret! is based at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, which is open from 9am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Admission to the museum is €8 and reduced tickets are €4. There is a special programme for families on selected Sundays that runs between 2 and 5pm; these events will be held on September 28, October 19, November 16, December 14, December 28 and January 4. As well as a guided tour of the exhibition, there's a 'scavenger hunt' and the chance to camouflage a 918 Spyder in your choice of disguise. Limited places on these mean you should email [email protected] if you fancy going; otherwise, find out more about the exhibition in general by going to www.porsche.de/museum.
