Featuring direct fuel injection the 1.0-litre EcoTec motor is turbocharged and produces 115hp with peak torque of 170Nm, which occurs at 1,800rpm. Instead of quoting a 0-100km/h time Opel gives the time to get from 80- to120km/h as a benchmark of overtaking ability; with the increment taking 10.4 seconds.
Stop-start is standard and while no figures have been announced for the 115hp engine the 90hp version offered in the UK is said to achieve 5.1 litres/100km. The other petrol engine on offer will be a naturally aspirated 1.4-litre unit, which produces 90hp.
Customers wanting diesel power can choose the 1.3-litre CDTi unit, which comes in either 75- or 95hp guises. Both are fitted with stop-start as standard and Opel claims that new generation turbochargers ensure smooth driving and minimal noise. The most economical Corsa at launch will be the three-door model fitted with the 75hp diesel and five-speed manual gearbox; this returns 3.2 litres/100km and has CO2 emissions of 85g/km.
