Mercedes-Benz will expand its A- and B-Class range in 2011 with the addition of an SUV and coupé alongside all-new three- and five-door hatchback models. The new line-up, expected to be rolled out from mid-2011 to 2013, will use a new platform that allows greater model versatility than the existing sandwich floor design. The current dual-level floor will live on in production versions of the Blue-Zero E-Cell concept, which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year.
The 2011 A-Class will supposedly be cheaper to produce thanks to its new platform and collaborative engine deal with Renault-Nissan. A new factory in Eastern Europe will manufacture the cars. Specific details of the new models are limited as yet, but an insider admitted to CompleteCar.ie that the A- and B-Class platform will be expanded to include SUV and sports car derivatives - the latter thought to be a compact four-door coupé in the guise of a small CLS. The new platform will be predominantly front-wheel drive, though four-wheel drive versions of certain models may be offered.
Ditching the unconventional mono-box shape for something more akin to VW Golf's, the next A-Class will be lower, longer and wider than the existing car. Direct injection four-cylinder engines, stop-start technology and independent suspension will also feature.
