If there's one thing the McLaren P1 doesn't require, it's more focus and power. But that's precisely what it is going to get - and to honour this über-P1 properly, the company is going to festoon it with a badge that needs no introduction: GTR.
Racing fanatics will know that the awesome McLaren F1 GTR stormed to victory at Le Mans in 1995, and 20 years on the name will grace a beefed up, track-only edition of the P1. But it won't be built until all 375 road-going versions of the car have been completed, and while McLaren will admit the GTR numbers will be 'strictly limited', it isn't saying precisely how many will emerge from its production line.
McLaren says the P1 GTR will be 'designed and developed as the best drivers' car in the world on track', chiefly because it will be free of any road-going constraints. Increases in performance, grip, aerodynamics and downforce are planned, it'll wear race-proven slick tyres and the targeted power figure will be 1,000hp. Whoa!
Anything else?
This decision to make a track-only P1 has apparently come about thanks to demand from road-going P1 owners. Associated with the car (and we can only presume this includes the purchase price of the vehicle; at least, we sincerely hope it does...) will be the McLaren P1 GTR programme - priced at a mere €2.48m, it will include exclusive consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and design director Frank Stephenson, privileged access to one of the McLaren racing simulators and participation in a minimum of six dedicated international drive events to be held at Formula One circuits.
