Alfa's new dual-clutch gearbox

Paris round-up: Alfa Romeo TCT.

What is it?

A new twin-clutch automatic gearbox called TCT was showcased by Alfa Romeo at the Paris Motor Show. Although it was fitted to a 170hp 1.4-litre MultiAir Giulietta. it will also be rolled out to the 170hp 2.0-litre JTDm diesel model.

Why's it here?

Dual-clutch gearboxes are not just trendy; they reduce fuel consumption too, so the adoption of the new Fiat-developed six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission is an important move by Alfa Romeo. It goes into the MiTo too.

Show stopper or floor filler?

This really is all there was to Alfa's stand - well, this and the usual smattering of lovely Italian ladies, obviously (and a mildly revised 159). The TCT 'box makes the 135hp 1.4-litre MultiAir MiTo quicker to 100km/h by 0.2 seconds, and a little cleaner - by 3g/km, to be exact.
