Mercedes broadens SUV range

SUVs are a key part of Mercedes-Benz's new model strategy, with more coupé-style models expected.

Mercedes-Benz is considering dividing its SUV range into two lines to cater for customers who want more car-like characteristics and those who want off-road ability. Although nothing has been confirmed by the company, the split is likely to take place after the production version of the Concept Coupé SUV goes on sale.

"The Concept Coupé SUV previews a four-door, coupé-styled model that will appeal to customers who want a sportily designed vehicle with a high seating position," Thomas Weber, the brand's research and development chief, said.

Other coupé SUV versions predicted include a fastback version of the recently introduced compact GLA. A mid-size GLC is also expected as a rival to the BMW X4 in the company's 2020 strategy to dominate the premium sector of the market. Other possible off-road style vehicles include a retro-styled city SUV based on the looks of the Ener-G-Force concept and built on a platform shared with Renault; and an S-class SUV to rival the forthcoming Bentley SUV.

Anything else?
The production version of the Concept Coupé SUV, expected to be called 'MLC', will be built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, Alabama starting next year.
