Irish Drift Championship at Mondello Park

Fans can watch the first round of the Irish Drift Championship this weekend at Mondello Park.

The first round of the Irish Drifting Championship (IDC) will take place this weekend at Mondello Park as part of 'Modified Live', the first big modified car show of the year. Running over two days the championship has attracted a 105-strong entry list.

Polish drift driver Pawel Trela will make his first IDC appearance driving his Opel GT, the first time the German sports car has run at an Irish Drift Championship event. Other drivers include 14-year old Jack Shanahan - who won the opening round of the British Drift Championship last week - in his M3-engined Nissan S14; Nigel Colfer, competing in his 800hp 180SX; and Shane O'Sullivan driving a Japspeed S15.

One of the favourites to win, despite having one of the least powerful cars in the Pro class, is Brian Egan in a lightweight Nankang Toyota AE86 Corolla. Another front runner is Mike Fitz with a 500hp rotary-engined Mazda.

Qualifying in both Semi-Pro and Pro categories will take place on Saturday with the finals on Sunday. The second round of the Irish Time Attack series will also take place on 27th April. Away from the track attractions include 'Ireland's Best Modified Cars', the Autoglym Show and Shine Competition and a trade area.

Anything else?
Championship manager Dave Egan said: "This is a new beginning for the series and a new era. With reigning champion James Deane representing the IDC in Europe this year, the way is open for a new name to be etched onto the trophy. With all of the top names returning, some with brand new machinery, I am expecting the closest title race in Irish Drifting history."

Advance tickets are on sale and include free grandstand seating, worth €5, with each ticket purchased. To order or find out more about the event go to www.mondellopark.ie/modified.
