More power and poise makes Cayman GTS

Hotter Porsche coupé gets more grunt and clever suspension.

It's not as if the regular Porsche Cayman S was exactly slow, or ponderous in the corners. In fact, it's one of the most reactive and exhilarating cars you can drive. For Porsche though, that's never quite enough and so there's this, the Cayman GTS.

Exterior
The GTS gets gorgeous black painted 20-inch wheels as standard, and if you want to make things even more hardcore, you can spec it with optional sports suspension that drops 20mm out of the ride height.

Interior
On the inside, leather and Alcantara are standard.

Mechanicals
Headlining the updates is a tweaked version of the 3.4-litre flat-six petrol engine that's already seen service in the Cayman S. For the GTS, it gets a little more power (up by 15- to 340hp) and a little more torque (up by 10- to 380Nm). That trims the 0-100km/h time to 4.6 seconds and raises the top speed to 285km/h.

To help corral all that power and torque, the GTS gets Porsche's computer-controlled PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) system as standard, as well as the Sport Chrono Pack - a high performance option on other Caymans. These offer the driver the opportunity to not only modify the damper stiffness, but also subtly change the throttle characteristics of the engine. In conjunction with the optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK - we love the way Porsche names its parts...) seven-speed double-clutch automatic transmission, the Launch Control function accessed via the Sport Plus button enables the Cayman GTS to knock 0.3 seconds off the 0-100km/h time of a standard Cayman S with PDK.

Don't go thinking that this is some race-track refugee though - quick the Cayman GTS may be, but it still has an eye firmly on efficiency and cleanliness. So, the GTS is the first Porsche to meet the stringent new EU 6 emissions regulations, and Porsche quotes an average fuel consumption figure of 34mpg.

Anything else?
Yes. The Sport Chrono pack isn't just about having launch control or a stopwatch on the dash - it also comes with Porsche's active engine mounts, which stiffen to hold the engine more tightly in place when you accelerate or brake hard. That reduces mass transfer within the chassis, making the Cayman handle even better. Clever, clever stuff.
