Volkswagen luxury van concept

Demonstrating the versatility of its van range, the Volkswagen Multivan Alltrack concept debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

If you have a lifestyle that involves towing boats, trips to the opera, a serious shopping habit and a desire to go off road, then the Volkswagen Multivan Alltrack concept could be the only vehicle you ever need - according to its maker. It is designed to showcase Volkswagen's all-wheel drive system and versatility of the Multivan - or Caravelle as it is known in Ireland. Although not confirmed for production there is no reason why it couldn't join the range if enough customers like it.

Exterior
There is no disguising the van-like shape, but it has been dressed up to look as smart as possible. Finished in 'Moonstone Mother of Pearl' paint the body carries grey bumpers that match the wheel arch protectors and sill covers. There is also a matt silver sump guard plus 19-inch alloy wheels.

Interior
Probably the most impressive part of the concept is the wood, leather and aluminium trimmed interior. The individual seats are covered in blue hide that contrasts with the dark brown boat wood floor. Metal tracks in the floor allow flexible arrangement of the passenger seats and can also be used to mount a self-contained kitchen module that includes water tank, sink and gas cooker. If you prefer in-car entertainment to in-car cooking there is also a surround sound system controlled by an eight-inch touchscreen.

Mechanicals
A 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine under the bonnet feeds 180hp to all four wheels through a Haldex four-wheel drive system. To help the Multivan get along off-road it has been designed with a 21-degree approach angle and 15-degree departure angle.

Anything else?
The Volkswagen Caravelle starts at €56,485 and though no four-wheel drive model is offered on the Irish market at present, there is a Transporter 4Motion available in other markets, so the idea of an all-wheel drive Caravelle that looks like the concept car is not too far-fetched at all.
