Porsche returns to the premier racing class

New Porsche 919 Hybrid is hoped to end Audi's dominance at Le Mans.

Proving that motorsport is still a hugely important part of the automotive world, Porsche used the Geneva Motor Show as the stage upon which to reveal its new 919 Hybrid LMP1 racer, which will compete in this year's World Endurance Championship (WEC). It will be the first time in 16 years that Porsche has raced in the top level of the sport, which includes the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The 919 Hybrid is, by Porsche's own admission, the most complex race car that it has ever built and led the company to draw upon its technical knowledge gained through the development of its road cars like the Panamera and its latest supercar, the 918 Spyder. Exact details as to the technical areas of the 919 Hybrid remain a closely guarded secret, but early indications show that the car should be highly competitive.

Anything else?
One of the star drivers heading up Porsche's WEC campaign is the former Red Bull Racing Formula One driver Mark Webber, who spent several seasons as teammate of four-time and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.
