Peugeot reveals new engines

Downsized PureTech e-THP petrol engines and low emissions BlueHDi diesels unveiled by Peugeot at the Geneva Motor Show.

Amongst other things, Peugeot showed off its new engines at the Geneva Motor Show for this first time this week. There are new three-cylinder petrol and 'clean diesel' units.

PureTech is the name of Peugeot's family of 1.2-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines. Using direct fuel injection the PureTech e-THP units are available in 110- and 130hp states of tune. Driveability as well as maximum power was part of the brief for the new motors; 95% of maximum torque is available between 1,500- and 3,500rpm. It is said that the PureTech family delivers fuel and CO2 emissions reductions of 21% compared with engines of equivalent power and flexibility. These engines will be available in the new Peugeot 308 from March and in the 208 and 2008 from the second half of 2014.

Clean diesel engines were also unveiled under the BlueHDi banner. Meeting the latest Euro 6 regulations the units feature Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and a particulate filter with additive. As a result, 99.9% of particulates are eliminated along with 90% of NOx emissions; Peugeot also promises that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are optimised. BlueHDi will be rolled out across the entire diesel range starting with the 308 and 508.

Anything else?
Peugeot's Hybrid Air system is also on show in Geneva. For the event the technology has been installed in a 2008 crossover combined with the PureTech petrol power. Hybrid Air uses compressed air rather than conventional batteries as an energy storage medium; energy from deceleration and braking is recovered using a combined hydraulic motor pump assembly.
