Polo BlueMotion goes petrol powered

Polo TSI BlueMotion to join diesel version, BlueGT and Cross Polo on Geneva stage.

We already knew that the mildly updated Polo will make its first public appearance at next month's Geneva Motor Show, but now we also know that it will not be alone. Alongside the standard car will be a trio of revised Polos and one all-new version - a petrol powered BlueMotion model.

That petrol powered car will pack a 90hp three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine and the same kind of aerodynamic body styling we have come to expect from cars that carry the BlueMotion badge. Thanks in part to this, the new car is said to achieve a combined fuel consumption figure of 4.1 litres/100km (68.9mpg). This means that the Polo TSI BlueMotion (to give it its full title) sets, according to Volkswagen, a new benchmark for petrol cars in its class.

What probably cannot be argued with is the claim that the diesel powered BlueMotion "sets a record in the market for five-seat diesel cars". For 2014 the Polo TDI BlueMotion retains its 75hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder diesel engine. What does change is how little fuel it sips - 3.1 litres/100km compared to 3.2 litres/100km for the pre-facelift variant (now 91.1mpg, up from 88.3mpg). Ok so it's only a marginal improvement, but every little helps.

Staying with the BlueMotion technology, the Polo BlueGT, a car that mixes the aerodynamic package with a punchy 1.4-litre TSI engine, will also receive its new frock just in time for Geneva. Well we say frock but like many of the visual upgrades for the 2014 Polo the cosmetic changes are a touch threadbare with the real action happening under the bonnet. Here the active cylinder management (ACT) equipped model receives a power boost, bringing peak power up to 150hp (from 140hp in the pre-facelift version). Available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or seven-speed DSG automatic, the BlueGT offers fuel consumption of 4.8 litres/100km (58.9mpg) and emissions of just 110g/km (4.7 litres/100km and 108g/km for the DSG model). Which leaves us with the final member of the Polo family - the high riding Cross Polo. Like the rest of its brood the faux crossover receives the new Polo look along with fresh colours, including two new metallic hues - Honey Orange and Titanium Beige - new seat materials, a new type of wheel and new smoked rear lights.

Anything else?
Alongside the Polo models Volkswagen will also expand the reach of the Polo's R-Line packages. Buyers of Comfortline and Highline models will be able to specify one of five alloy wheel designs including new 16-inch Salvador rims; tick the box for a host of high-gloss exterior features like the grille, new R-Line bumpers with integrated fog-lights, customisable roof spoiler; and, for models, with visible tailpipes these can be had in chrome.

Inside, buyers can also plum for R-Line sports seats in either cloth or a leather/Alcantara finish, a newly designed multifunction steering wheel, stainless steel pedals and black roof liner.

Full Irish market information on the new Polo line-up has yet to be confirmed.
