More power, lower emissions from Renault's new dCi 160 engine

Formula 1 tech leveraged in twin-turbo Renault 1.6 dCi diesel engine.

Renault's Formula One trickle-down tech is apparently evident in its newly announced dCe 160 diesel engine. By adopting Renault's 'drive for energy efficiency', its new dCe Twin Turbo 1.6-litre powerplant is claimed to have the 'feel of a 2.0-litre engine'. Renault says that the newly announced 1.6-litre is a true first for a diesel.

The quoted stats for the new diesel engine include 160hp with 380Nm of torque. And in line with Renault's drive to downsize engine capacity, a significant 25 per cent improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions is claimed.

By adopting two sequential turbochargers, 90 per cent of peak torque is available from just 1,500rpm, using the first turbo. By adding a second turbo, Renault says the diminutive 1.6-litre diesel provides 100hp per litre at faster speeds. Emission of pollutants from the new engine complies with the new Euro 6b legislation, which is good news as it comes into force on 1st September of this year.

Anything else?
By clever positioning of its downsizing strategy, Renault says the 1.6-litre dCe 160 can easily power larger cars, with special focus on forthcoming D- and E-segment vehicles.
