Over 700 hybrids recalled by Toyota Ireland

Toyota recalls the third generation Prius for a quick software update.

More than 700 Irish-registered units of the third generation Prius have been recalled. An issue related to the software controlling the boost convertor in the Prius' Intelligent Power Module is the reason behind the recall. If the software is faulty, then it could cause the Prius to run in the 'failsafe' mode. Under extreme circumstances, the hybrid system might totally give up, resulting in the car stopping.

Although 11 reports have recorded the occurrence of such an issue, Toyota maintains that there are no reports of accident or injury due to the malfunction. In order to rectify the problem, the Japanese carmaker has decided to give the examples of Prius manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014 a small software update.

Anything else?
Toyota will individually contact the owners of the affected vehicles to bring their cars to the nearest dealership. The software update will be free of charge and should take no longer than 0 minutes. There is no need to worry if you own any other Toyota hybrid vehicle, because this issue affects the Prius alone.

This is a part of a global recall of 1.9 million Prius hybrids.
