Met Eireann issues severe weather warning

Motorists advised of severe weather for west and north of country.

Met Eireann has issued a severe weather warning for this weekend. An Atlantic storm will cross the country with a status orange alert in place for Munster, Connacht and Donegal. It's predicted that it will be accompanied by heavy showers with thunder and sleet and snow showers likely on higher ground. There is also a high risk of spot flooding in affected areas.

Motorists are being advised of high coastal flooding due to spring tides and extremely high waves. They are also being advised to slow down, giving sufficient distance from the vehicle in front. Those driving high sided vehicles such as trucks and busses are being asked to take particular care on exposed roads. Equally, drivers in built-up areas such as main cities and towns are being asked to make room for cyclists and pedestrians during the rush hour periods.

Worst affected areas will be the Southwest, West and North West of the country. Winds will gust to 100-130km/h and will make driving conditions difficult. The weather warning is in place for the country from Friday, through to early Sunday.

Anything else?
AA Roadwatch advised motorists not to drive through standing water for fear of getting stuck. As ever, CompleteCar.ie suggests motorists give themselves extra time for travelling in case diversions are put in place. And only venture out if the journey is absolutely necessary while the storm passes.
