Volkswagen joins Vision Gran Turismo

Extreme-looking Scirocco Concept marks Volkswagen's Vision Gran Turismo entry.

The automotive virtual world bandwagon that is the Gran Turismo 6 Vision project has made news again this week, following the unveiling of Volkswagen's Scirocco-esque concept that will be making its way to GT6.

Exterior
The fuzzy, blurry teaser image Volkswagen has revealed is likely to be all we'll get before it hits Gran Turismo 6, but already it's clear to see that it carries some extreme proportions. The first things that jump out are the enormous alloy wheels that are contained within the car's bodywork thanks to some heavily flared wheelarches. Couple these alloys to the stunted roofline and the result is likely to be an exceptionally low and sporty driving position.

Elsewhere, the front end has been fitted with a large splitter and some equally massive air intakes. The rear end follows the same angular design as the car's doors and seems to borrow its C-pillars from the next generation Audi quattro.

Mechanicals
In terms of drivability, Volkswagen has said nothing; and based on previous concepts in the company's portfolio we're likely to get one of two options when it comes to the drivetrain. One option could be a hardcore, lightweight, front-wheel drive configuration; or Volkswagen could base the Scirocco on the mid-engined, rear-drive Golf W12 design study that was launched a few years ago - packing a Bentley-derived, 650hp powerplant.

Anything else?
So far, a total of 28 manufacturers are taking part in Vision Gran Turismo; with concepts from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Bertone and Nike already previewed. All Vision Gran Turismo concepts will soon be made available in Gran Turismo 6 via a downloadable content pack.
