Porsche lays out its 2014 motorsport plans

Porsche is a little busy in motorsport in 2014. Here's the plan.

Porsche has announced its motorsport programme for 2014, which it describes as the most intensive ever. The 919 hybrid will be campaigned in the LMP class of the World Endurance Championship, which includes Le Mans. Along with that there are also two works entries running the 911 RSR around the world: Porsche AG Team Manthey in the 'LM GTE' class of the World Endurance Championship; and Porsche North America contesting the new Tudor United Sportscar Championship with CORE autosport running the race team.

Porsche Motorsport has also increased the size of its driver squad for next year. New Zealander Brendon Hartley and Marc Lieb from Germany have been named as regular drivers of the 919 hybrid. Others signed for the LMP1 season include former F1 racer Mark Webber, along with Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani.

The driver line-up and official naming of the LMP racer took place on the Porsche Night of Champions in Weissach. Choosing the 919 designation is a nod to both the classic, Le Mans winning, Porsche 917 and the hybrid 918 Spyder.

Anything else?
One-make racing series, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, has been confirmed as a supporting race to Formula 1 for three more years. The cup has been running for 22 years and has been a stepping stone for drivers starting a career in international GT racing.
