Audi Q1 gets green light

Entry-level Audi SUV to start production in 2016.

Audi has now confirmed that its Q family of SUVs will soon contain a new, smaller member with the production of the Q1.

Exterior
As we write this, Audi has not revealed any official pictures of the Q1, just a sketch; although we do know that it will bear some resemblance to the Crosslane Coupé Concept we saw at the Paris Motor Show back in 2012 - albeit with five doors as opposed to the Crosslane's three. We would also expect the Q1 to use the same MQB chassis found underneath the Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf and SEAT Leon - just to give you an idea of the size.

Mechanicals
Again, we haven't been given any word on engines; however, with it being the baby in the range, a choice of both two- and four-wheel drive models is expected. In addition, the Q1 is also likely to be offered with at least one hybrid powertrain alongside the traditional petrol and diesel engine line-up.

Anything else?
"The Q1 is a part of our broad-based SUV strategy; and will round off our Q-series at the bottom end," comments Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management, Audi AG.

However, the Q1 won't be leaving the production line in Ingolstadt, Germany until early 2016; so there is a bit of a wait for it. It's also part of Audi's goal to expand its model line-up from 49 to more than 60 cars by 2020; as well as selling more than two million examples every year. By which time the 'Q' range will also likely contain the Q4, Q6 and Q8.
