Frozen Black for MINIs

MINI unveils an exclusive new paint option for Countryman and Paceman models.

MINI has announced a new body colour option for the Cooper and John Cooper Works versions of its Countryman and Paceman. The Frozen Black metallic paint will be offered in only limited numbers on the range-topping models due to the labour intensive process in applying the paint. Unlike the usual paint colours that are applied by robots in the factory, the process for completing the Frozen Black look involves a more hands-on approach, which is carried out by MINI's production partner Magna Steyr at the production facility in Graz, Austria.

The car's surface is first treated with a base layer that includes corrosion protection and a finish that allows the Frozen Black paint to stick properly. The paint is then applied followed by a clear lacquer finish that has in it silicates to help to create that matted appearance, as well as a velvet effect, which to touch feels unlike a conventional high gloss finish. Other body parts such as the mirror caps and front and rear aprons are also finished in Frozen Black metallic paint.

Anything else?
Although this special paint finish is claimed to be up to the same high standards as others, it does require some added care and attention. MINI says that the Frozen Black paint is completely weather- and car wash resistant, but using polish or wax can result in a gloss effect coming through. In order to prevent this from happening, MINI will offer specially developed care products for this particular paint.
