Next-gen Suzuki SUV unveiled

Suzuki iV-4 concept previews replacement for the Grand Vitara.

Proving just how popular the compact SUV segment is becoming, Suzuki also unveiled a new model at the Frankfurt Motor Show, although it remains a 'concept' for now. The iV-4 is a stylish design and the word is that we shouldn't expect it to change too much by the time the production version comes around. And in case you're not sure about the name, the "i" stands for "individuality", "V" for "vehicle", and "4" for "4 wheel drive".

Exterior
Suzuki has managed to make the iV-4 quite a stylish proposition while still incorporating traditional styling SUV cues. The front-end retains that familiar five-slotted grille design and it is crowned with a clamshell bonnet design. Along the side, some bold contour lines give the iV-4 a sporty look that makes it less plain looking in comparison to Suzuki's SUVs of years gone by - hopefully these will remain unchanged on the production model. What is less likely to make it onto the finished car is the illuminated front grille and Tonka-toy-esque wheels.

Interior
As one would expect from a concept car, the interior of the Suzuki features some extravagant fabrics and textures, but sadly Suzuki hasn't given us too much of an idea as to what the interior of the production model will be like once it makes it to the showroom. We would expect it to have a cabin to equal the exterior's modern design though perhaps not some of the adventurous choices of fabrics and materials.

Mechanicals
By the time the iV-4 goes into production, which is expected to be in 2015, Suzuki aims for it to be one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles in its class. This will come as a result using lightweight materials and more efficient engines. Suzuki will also be offering its next generation of four-wheel drive technology, called AllGrip, which it claims also offers a high degree of on-road performance and exceeds a "typical city SUV".

Anything else?
In a market segment as busy as the compact SUV one is, Suzuki will need to ensure that the iV-4 stands out from the crowd and it intends to do this by offering a very high level of personalisation to the customer that will extend beyond the usual trim and fabric options.
