Efficient new Volvo engines

Volvo has announced the arrival of new engines for new S60 and V60.

Volvo has revealed two new 1.6-litre petrol engines. The T3 and T4 feature GTDi (which stands for Gasoline Turbocharged Direct injection) technology.  The new power units will arrive later this year in the S60 and V60 Sports Wagon.

The T3 develops 150hp and peak torque of 240Nm.  The T4 develops the same torque figure from 1,600- to 5,000rpm with an overboost function that can deliver 270Nm, while its maximum power is 180hp.  No fuel consumption data have been released as yet, though Volvo claims the new engines are twenty percent more economical than larger engines with similar performance figures.

The T4 can be specified with either six-speed manual or six-speed Powershift automatic gearboxes. The former comes with engine start-stop while Powershift models disengage the gear if the driver comes off the throttle while the car is moving - reducing friction. The less powerful T3 is available only with manual gears.

Full performance and economy figures for the S60 and V60 with the new engines will be released before the cars go on sale in late 2010.
