More efficient Lexus IS 200d on the way

Coinciding with the new model year Lexus will replace the IS 220d with the more efficient IS 200d.

The top-selling diesel version of Lexus' IS junior executive saloon will move down a tax bracket in 2011 - from Band C to B - with the arrival of a new IS 200d model. It replaces the IS 220d and is part of a raft of changes to the line-up.

At the heart of the new IS 200d is a de-tuned version of the 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine. Power is down from 175- to 150hp, while maximum torque has been reduced from 400- to 340Nm. Performance takes a hit, indicated by a 1.3-second increase (to 10.2 seconds) for the 0-100km/h sprint time. In return, Lexus promises that refinement has been improved.

All models in the IS range will receive a styling update, including headlight and rear light designs, revised front grille, new exterior colours and alloy wheel options. LED daytime running lights will be available on some versions.

The less popular, petrol-powered IS 250 and IS 250C coupé-cabriolet are slightly more efficient than before and all engines are now compliant with the Euro V emissions legislation.

Update on 31 August 2010:

Lexus Ireland has released a full price list for the refreshed IS range. Entry level is cheaper than before at €34,680 for the IS 200d S-Design model.

The IS 200d and 250 are available in S-Design, Executive and F-Sport specifications. The latter replaces the previous Sport trim level and features much more extrovert styling add-ons.

The new IS will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show next month, though Irish buyers can order the car now. The IS officialy reaches Irish showrooms this November.
