There's a storm brewing!

RSA advising road users to take care ahead of wet weather.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is advising road users to take extra care on the roads with news that up to 30mm of rain expected to fall.

"The changeable weather that's being forecast for the coming days will present some very challenging road conditions for road users," says Noel Brett, Chief Executive Officer, RSA.

The advisory has been issued on the back of a Met Éireann flood warning for Munster, Connacht and West Ulster due to heavy rain and thundery storms.

"As visibility is greatly reduced while travelling in heavy rain remember to allow extra time to complete your journey.  Use your dipped headlights, slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front to allow a greater braking distance."

Road conditions are likely to be at their most treacherous due to the recent dry spell experienced throughout the country.  "Roads are at their most slippery when the weather breaks after a long dry spell," explains Mr Brett. "This is because the fine grit on roads tends to polish the road surface and roads also see the build-up of a film of tar, rubber and oil deposit."

"The expected rainfall and the condition of roads will make driving particularly hazardous as road surfaces become slippery reducing skid resistance."
