New McLaren track car

Mere mortals can now buy a track-specific version of the McLaren 12C.

McLaren GT has unveiled plans to make a track-only variant of the 12C supercar. Dubbed the 12C GT Sprint, the latest addition to the 12C family is designed to slot in under the full racing 12C GT3 and 12C Can-Am Edition models.

Exterior
Due to the standard aero kit fitted to the 12C road car, not a great deal had to be done to develop the track-only version. The front bumper has been swapped for a more aggressive looking piece, a GT3-style bonnet has been fitted and extra vents have been created for better cooling. New centre-locking 19-inch OZ alloys have also been fitted; combined with racing slick Pirellis and a lower ride height. You'd be hard pushed to miss the massive wing on the version pictured; however, this and the carbon splitter are both optional extras.

Interior
As you would expect, the 12C's cabin has gone on a diet for the track version; and it now comes equipped with a full FIA-spec roll cage with an integrated fire extinguisher system. A HANS-approved racing seat replaces the 12C's standard item, complete with a six-point racing harness. A carbon-fibre dashboard with digital racing dials has been added, too. Happily, McLaren has decided to leave a lightweight version of its air conditioning system installed to add a little bit of comfort.

Mechanicals
The engine powering the 12C GT Sprint is the same 625hp, 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged unit found in the road car; connected to the standard gearbox. This has been enhanced by a bespoke cooling system and the PCC suspension system has been tuned for a firmer, but allegedly more responsive ride. Drivers can also choose from three individual handling modes, meaning the 12C GT Sprint can adapt to different circuits, weather conditions and driving styles.

Anything else?
The Sprint's official debut was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend, with the first batch of 20 cars available before the end of the year.
