Honda joins forces with GM

New tie-up aimed to accelerate development of fuel cell technology.

Two of the biggest influences in hydrogen fuel-cell technology have announced their alliance to develop the next generation of fuel-cell systems and hydrogen storage methods.

General Motors and Honda are ranked at #1 and #2 by the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index, with both companies collectively patenting over 1,200 ideas between 2002 and 2012. The two manufacturers aim to have introduced the next stage of fuel-cell technology by around 2020; including developing a more viable refuelling infrastructure. By advancing the next phase in automotive propulsion, the hope is that more and more consumers will move away from internal combustion and head towards cleaner motoring.

"Fuel cell electric vehicles have a definitive advantage out of all zero CO2 emission technologies," comments Takanobu Ito, President and CEO of Honda Motor Co. Ltd. "Honda and GM are eager to accelerate the market penetration of this ultimate clean mobility technology, and create an advanced system that will be both more capable and more affordable."

In terms of practicality, a hydrogen fuel-cell powered car has the potential to function in a similar way to a petrol-powered vehicle. Fuel-cell vehicles can manage long ranges between fill ups and refuelling is as quick as filling up with petrol. The challenge facing both companies is to implement this expensive new technology around today's existing infrastructure.

Speaking about the joint venture, Chairman and CEO of GM Dan Akerson said, "We are convinced this is the best way to develop this important technology, which has the ability to reduce the dependence on petroleum and establish sustainable mobility."

Anything else?
As the leader in fuel-cell technology, GM's Project Driveway has built up almost five million kilometres of real-world driving since it began in 2007 - the most out of any vehicle manufacturer. Honda also began testing hydrogen fuel-cell cars back in 2002 with the Honda FCX. A total of 85 examples were leased in the US and Japan, including the 2009 World Green Car, the FCX Clarity. The third generation FCX model is set to be launched in 2015.
