Toyota recalls Yaris for power steering issue

New recall affects just 614 Toyota cars in Ireland.

Sadly, for Toyota, not much. It's issuing another global recall, this time for the Yaris and Verso-S. Around 185,000 cars will be affected globally. It's for cars built between August 2010 and March 2012. A total of 614 Irish cars will be affected - 414 Yaris models and 200 Verso-S. Toyota will be writing to all owners to arrange a suitable time for the work to be done.

The problem this time is in the power steering system. It seems that water droplets, mostly in the form of condensation, can work their way into the electric power steering module and cause a short circuit. That can cause a power assistance drop out, which can leave drivers with unexpectedly heavy steering.

Toyota is at pains to point out that there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the issue. The fix is a replacement of the power steering module, which takes a couple of hours.

Anything else?
Well, to be fair, it's a pretty minor issue and one which Toyota is fixing with no major fuss. But it demonstrates that we in the media are still on something of a hair-trigger when it comes to a story with the words Toyota and recall in it.
