QR codes to save lives according to Merc

Mercedes-Benz to use QR codes to tell emergency services all about your car.

Mercedes-Benz is to start utilising QR code technology to help give emergency services vital information about the vehicle, which is hoped will save more lives.

QR codes are similar in a way to barcodes and can be scanned by camera-equipped smartphones or tablets to direct the user to web based information. Traditionally, QR codes have been used for marketing purposes, usually directing a user to a promotional website, but this is the first time they have been used in a safety sense.

Germany's regulatory body for automobiles - the ADAC - mandates that every car model should have a copy of its schematics available in order to give rescuers the ability to safely dismantle a crashed car following an accident. This is becoming even more of a hot topic now that car manufacturers are using more exotic and stronger metals in construction, but also as more complex electrical systems such as electric vehicles and hybrids become more commonplace.

These 'rescue sheets' will be available to access via a QR code sticker that will be placed behind the fuel flap door and also on the inside of the opposite B-pillar. The information they contain will reduce the risk of further injury to rescuers by helping them to avoid cutting into any pyrotechnic, high pressure or high voltage devices such as airbags or hybrid battery systems.

Mercedes says the reason that these locations were chosen is because "it seldom occurs that both these parts are badly damaged at the same time in an accident, and they are furthermore easily accessible from the outside." The German manufacturer has also waived any patenting rights in the hope that it will encourage other car makers to do the same.
