Audi A3 goes hybrid

New hybrid powertrain for Audi A3 e-tron.

This is the near future according to Audi, where an A3 hatchback can do 188mpg. The A3 e-tron concept will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, demonstrating the capabilities of plug-in hybrid technology. It points the way to future models that combine internal combustion and electric drive.

Exterior
On the outside it is pretty much standard Audi A3 Sportback, but the radiator grille gets horizontal bars. The car also carries A3 e-tron script along the sides of the body.

Interior
The interior isn't changed either, apart from controls and readouts for the hybrid drive system.

Mechanicals
A 54hp electric motor works with the modified 1.4-litre TFSI 150hp engine for a combined total of 204hp. The combination of power sources provides a broad spread of torque - the electric motor puts out its maximum from stationary to 2,000rpm, with the petrol engine peaking from 1,750- to 4,000rpm. Drive goes through a six-speed 'e-S tronic' transmission and Audi claims 0-100km/h in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 222km/h. Carbon dioxide emissions are 35g/km.

Anything else?
The driveline incorporates an electric-only mode with a range of up to 50 kilometres at speeds of up to 130km/h. In hybrid mode both units work together for maximum acceleration and shut down when the driver stops accelerating, allowing the car to save energy by coasting.
