Nissan has given the X-Trail a makeover with fresh looks and a revised interior. The updated model will go on sale in Ireland in January 2011.
The tweaked styling includes a new grille, headlamp and front bumper. The changes are aimed at making the SUV appear more dynamic. The rear end gets LED daytime running and brake lights, which are said to be more visible than the old-style lamps. The X-Trail's profile has changed too, with larger 18-inch alloy wheels on some versions and wider wheelarch mouldings to accommodate bigger tyres. Overall, the changes have added 10mm to the length, width and height.
Inside, new materials should improve perceived quality. Switch surrounds, the steering wheel, the gear selector surround and door-mounted armrests are all claimed to be nicer to touch. The instruments are redesigned to be easier to read and there is a new on-board computer with a white-on-black display. Reshaped front seats mean an extra 10mm of rear-seat knee room. The final highlight of the new interior is a glovebox that can keep its contents warm or cold.
Mechanical updates include changes to the diesel engine, which bring it up to Euro 5 specification. The automatic transmission has been modified to reduce friction while the manual gearbox has revised ratios to improve performance and economy. There is also a gearchange indicator to urge drivers to drive economically.
Nissan hasn't revealed prices and the range structure for the updated X-Trail as yet; expect this to be announced closer to the January on-sale date.
