Is Volkswagen working on a Golf R Cabriolet?

Uncovered patent renderings point to the Wörthersee concept being made reality.

During the 2011 edition of the Volkswagen love-in known as Wörthersee the German giant unveiled a drop top version of the 265hp Golf R. Most wrote the concept off as a flight of fantasy along the lines of the mental GTI W12-650, but the latest reports may put paid to that.

Recently uncovered patent renderings would appear to show that the Golf R Cabriolet is on the way and will serve as a fitting swansong for the sixth generation Golf. The images, uncovered by Chinese Car Times, show a car that is remarkably similar to the concept shown on the banks of Lake Wörthersee. Golf R trademarks including unique body styling, 19-inch 'Talladega' alloy wheels and a centrally mounted exhaust all feature.

If the Golf R Cabriolet does make production the four-wheel drive monster will be the fastest drop-top Golf ever produced. Watch out flies!

Of course none of this has any relevance to the Irish market as we do not get the recently launched GTI Cabriolet, let alone any possible R version.
