Volkswagen top sales charts for second month

Volkswagen moves one step closer to 1st place with 12.6 per cent market share for May.

Volkswagen has, for the second month in succession, claimed top spot on the Irish market with 1,077 registrations in May. The figure equates to a market share of 14 per cent and moves the German giant one step closer to the coveted overall top spot that is currently held by Toyota.

Toyota had a poor month in May, only racking up 833 registrations, meaning that 20 cars separate the top two manufacturers overall. So far this year Volkswagen Ireland has registered 7,580 vehicles representing a market share of 12.6% (up 0.5%) on 2011.

"May was a very competitive month in the motor industry but thanks to the great offers we have for customers, from free tax and insurance to hugely competitive finance offers we have seen strong showroom traffic throughout the month," commented, John Donegan, Head of Sales and Marketing for Volkswagen Ireland. "There has been a huge reaction to our latest offerings, such as Cross Polo and Golf Match and our dealers will soon be getting the first of the latest, 21st Century Beetles in the coming weeks."

Volkswagen's performance comes against a backdrop of downturn in the motoring industry with sales down 8.8 per cent on 2011 with May down 12.9 per cent on May 2011.
