More tech details on new Astra OPC

Opel tells us a little more about its 280hp hot hatch.

More details of the soon-to-be launched Opel Astra OPC have been released.  The 280hp Astra goes on sale later this year with the promise of strong mid-range torque without torque-steer.

The 400Nm torque figure is claimed to be the highest of any 2.0-litre engine in its class.  More importantly, the all-aluminium, turbocharged engine can sustain that figure all the way from 2,450- to 5,000rpm.

Opel also claims to have tuned the sound from the engine with the hope of pleasing enthusiasts.  At mid to high revs a 'jet-like' noise is promised; this is said to be particularly memorable when changing from third to fourth at full throttle.

On a more sensible note the combined fuel economy is 34.9mpg (8.1 litres/100km) with CO2 emissions of 189g/km (Band E, €677 per annum) thanks in part to stop-start.

A multi-plate mechanical limited-slip differential is fitted to improve traction.  The Astra OPC also shares the Insignia OPC's and Astra GTC's HiPerStrut front suspension.  Designed to reduce camber changes in cornering the system promises improved steering feel and reduced torque steer.

The rest of the suspension is lowered and stiffened with 19-inch alloys covering Brembo brakes.
