MG previews baby SUV inspired by the Midget

MG to take on the Nissan Juke with its Icon crossover.

The Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) has released images of a new MG Motors concept that is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Auto China motor show.

Called the Icon, the concept signals a forthcoming Nissan Juke rivalling compact SUV that is expected to be introduced to the Chinese market in 2014. Based on the underpinnings of the Golf-sized MG 5 the Icon looks to evoke MG's of old with the gaping-mouth grille and pontoon lights lifted from the MGB GT.

Concept folly includes Mazda RX-8 style 'suicide' rear doors and four individual bucket seats inside, but on the whole the Icon seems remarkably restrained. Power is expected to come from an SAIC-developed 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 137hp. The 1.9-litre diesel engine available in the MG 5 is also tipped as a likely candidate should the Icon make it to Europe, as expected.
