BMW Ireland recalls 8,500 examples of 5 and 6 Series

Possibility of fire prompts BMW to recall 1.3 million vehicles globally.

The firm said "In order to carry out a quality measure, BMW is recalling all BMW 5 and 6 Series models of the previous generation, built between 2003 and 2010 and still on the market, for repair at authorised dealers."

All fingers point towards a battery cable, situated in the boot, which can be mounted incorrectly and "can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire".

However, BMW was quick to add that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries sustained from this problem, and only nine incorrectly mounted cables have so far been reported. The firm is writing to all owners of those cars affected to arrange for the problem area to be inspected and fixed if required. It should take 30 minutes and is of course completed for free.

Owners of some 8,500 vehicles in Ireland will be contacted by BMW and invited to visit their local dealer for the check.
