Who photographed the new Jaguar Type 01?
Annie Leibovitz, no less. Leibovitz is way beyond famous. Her work as a photographer has gone down in legend. Don’t just take our word for it: the US Library of Congress literally described her as a “living legend.” Most famously, she photographed John Lennon and Yoko Ono mere hours before Lennon was murdered. She’s been a staff photographer for Rolling Stone magazine, and for Vanity Fair, and has taken some of the most iconic images of 20th- and 21st-century celebrities and world leaders. The roster of those who’ve been in front of her lens includes Demi Moore, Marion Cotillard, Dolly Parton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dan Aykroyd, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Barack Obama, Volodymyr Zelensky, Queen Elizabeth II, and, and, and… the list really does go on.
Not your average car photographer then?
Not really no. Even so, the New York premiere of the Jaguar Type 01 was held at Storied NYC, a location which was once home to Leibovitz’s studio. So, there’s already a connection between one of the greatest photographers ever, and Jaguar’s striking new electric car. If only there were a third, equally stunning element, to include…
Sounds like you’re leading us somewhere…
I’m leading to Florence Pugh. A Jaguar ambassador, but also one of the most critically-acclaimed actresses in the world, with starring roles in Midsommar, Oppenheimer, Little Women, Thunderbolts, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and of course the upcoming cinematic behemoth that is Avengers: Doomsday. To call Pugh famous is to rather undersell it. She’s been on the Graham Norton show and everything…
What came out of the Jaguar Type 01 shoot?
Leibovitz, Pugh, and the Jaguar Type 01 created some stunning photographs together, which you can see here, including some rather cool behind-the-scenes shots.
Annie Leibovitz said: “What interested me most about this portrait series was photographing two extraordinary and contrasting subjects. Florence brings warmth, presence and humanity, while Type 01 is sculpted, precise and striking in its form. Rather than treating the car as a backdrop, I wanted to photograph them both with the same curiosity, exploring their relationship as two distinct characters within the frame.”
What did Florence Pugh say?
Florence Pugh said: “I’ve always been drawn to people and brands that are unapologetically original, which is one of the reasons this partnership with Jaguar feels so natural. Collaborating with Annie Leibovitz on these images was a remarkable experience. She has an incredible ability to capture character and individuality, and bringing that together with the bold vision of Type 01 made this a truly special creative collaboration.”
What did Jaguar make of it all?
Carlee Hardaker, Marketing and Communications Director of Jaguar, said: “Following the announcement of Florence Pugh as Jaguar’s inaugural brand ambassador, we wanted to create a collaboration that reflected the bold creative vision at the heart of our new era. Annie Leibovitz has spent decades capturing many of the world’s most influential cultural figures through a singular and unmistakable lens. Her ability to tell compelling stories through imagery made her the ideal photographer to interpret both Florence and Type 01. Florence Pugh is the face of our new era. Annie Leibovitz is the lens. Together, they capture the fearless creative vision that defines Jaguar today.”
What do we think?
You can make your own mind up about how the Jaguar Type 01 looks (we pretty much love it), but there’s no denying the sheer magnetic star presence of Florence Pugh, nor the incredible skills behind the camera of Annie Leibovitz. Put the three together, and you get a little bit of magic…
When can I see the Jaguar Type 01 in Ireland?
Very, very soon. This weekend, in fact. On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, the first Jaguar Type 01 in Ireland will be on display at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) as part of Dublin Gallery Weekend.
