How much have diesel and petrol prices gone up in Ireland?
Diesel saw the steepest jump, climbing 19 cents per litre in a single month to an average of €1.92. That's up from €1.73 in July, an increase of around 11 per cent.
Petrol also rose, though less dramatically, increasing by 9 cents per litre to €1.84 on average, compared with €1.75 in July.
Roughly, that translates as €9.50 extra to fill a 50-litre diesel tank, or about €4.50 more for petrol. Over four fills in a month, AA Ireland estimates that adds up to an extra €38 for diesel drivers and €18 for petrol users.
Why are fuel prices rising in Ireland?
The latest spike is being driven by wholesale market movements rather than tax changes, as excise duty remained unchanged during August.
Temporary reductions in excise, which have been supporting lower prices at the pumps, were extended until the end of the month, but they are now starting to unwind.
From 1 September, a phased restoration of excise duty begins, adding 9 cents per litre to petrol and 10 cents to diesel in the first stage. Further increases are already scheduled across the autumn.
"This is not the peak”
An AA Ireland spokesperson said motorists should brace for more volatility in the months ahead: "This is a significant month-on-month increase, and motorists should understand where it has come from. Excise duty did not change during August, so what drivers are seeing at the pumps reflects global market conditions rather than any change in tax. Diesel has borne the brunt of it this month."
"The concern is what comes next. From 1 September, excise begins to be restored in stages, starting with 9 cents on petrol and 10 cents on diesel. If wholesale prices hold where they are, motorists should plan for further increases through the autumn rather than expect this month to be the peak."
AA Ireland added that global oil markets remain unpredictable, with geopolitical tensions, supply pressures and currency fluctuations all feeding into pump prices.
What can drivers do to reduce costs?
While fuel prices are largely driven by international markets, AA Ireland is urging motorists to focus on what they can control in the short term.
Simple maintenance steps, such as keeping tyres correctly inflated, servicing vehicles regularly and replacing clogged air filters, can all help improve efficiency and reduce running costs over time.
Fuel price increases in Ireland
In Ireland, excise duty will be increased in four steps between September and December, leading to higher fuel prices over that period:
September: +9c petrol / +10c diesel
October: +8c petrol / +8c diesel
November: +5c petrol / +7c diesel
December: +5c petrol / +7c diesel
