There is an all-new generation of Mercedes-Benz GLA, and this time around it will be available with a both petrol hybrid and electric powertrains to suit a variety of tastes.
Serving as the entry point to the German brand's expansive SUV model range, the GLA may be its smallest crossover, but it features many of the same technologies and styling seen in the company's larger models.
That similarity in design is most obvious at the front, where a larger and more upright front grille is designed according to the car's powertrain.
In the electric models, the area takes on a more decorative role with 608 square light points that are backlit by 158 micro-LEDs to create a design that is immediately recognisable.
Complementing that are LED headlights that feature a three-pointed star element on cars equipped with the optional Multibeam matrix technology.
As with other Mercedes-Benz models, the door handles electrically deploy when the car is unlocked and then retract to sit flush with the bodywork when the car is locked or moving.
Squared-off wheel arches underline the GLA's semi-rugged SUV image, and there is a range of wheel sizes starting at 18 inches and going up to 20 inches.
There will also be a sportier AMG Line version that is available with different wheel designs, along with exterior body elements including a high-gloss-black lip spoiler and door sills.
Is the Mercedes GLA bigger than before?
The exterior design is more evolution than revolution, and the same can be said for its proportions, though there are some changes.
The GLA's wheelbase has grown - by 61mm to 2.8 metres - as has the crossover's width, while the front and rear tracks have increased by 21mm and 31mm, respectively. Despite the growth in these areas, the GLA's roof height has come down by 20mm compared to its predecessor.
What's the new Mercedes GLA like on the inside?
Passengers benefit from more headroom and legroom. The designers have opted for a mostly digital experience inside with a full-width dashboard panel housing different displays depending on the specification grade.
A broad but thin panel divides the front seats and contains space for a wireless phone charging pad, a pair of cupholders in a north-south layout and a small storage bin underneath a central armrest.
Below is a more open stowage area for larger items such as bags, and there are some USB-C charging ports as well.
The optional MBUX Superscreen features a 10.25-inch instrument panel, and two 14-inch touchscreen displays side-by-side to provide a completely digital interface.
It runs the company's latest 'MB.OS' operating system, which features more than 40 apps, a digital voice assistant that can reference Google Gemini and ChatGPT and is fully compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring.
How much boot space does the latest Mercedes GLA get?
Mercedes has increased the boot capacity of the GLA by 70 litres, bringing it up to 410 litres when all seats are in use. The rear seat back has a 40:20:40 split and, when lowered, it increases luggage space to 1,400 litres.
In the case of the electric GLA, there is also a frunk under the bonnet that can hold 107 litres.
What performance comes from the electric Mercedes GLA?
Buyers will initially have a choice of three powertrains for the GLA electric. The lineup starts with the GLA 200, which has a 58kWh LFP battery and an electric motor making up to 224hp.
The GLA 250+ is the first of two models that use a larger 85kWh NMC battery and is propelled by a 272hp motor.
This version will get the longest driving range at 657 kilometres and, thanks to its 800-volt architecture, it can charge up to 320kW on DC outlets, adding up to 270 kilometres of driving range in ten minutes.
Topping the electric GLA range is the 350 4Matic, which uses the same 85kWh battery and a dual-motor setup with a 354hp output. This all-wheel-drive model also has the highest towing capacity in the GLA range at 2,000kg with a braked trailer.
What if I don't want an electric Mercedes GLA?
The Mercedes-Benz GLA will also be available from 2027 with the choice of two hybrid petrol engines with front- or all-wheel drive.
These feature a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a 48-volt hybrid system coupled with a 1.3kWh battery. That small battery can provide enough energy for engine-off parking manoeuvres and coasting, while short distances can be covered by the electric motor when power demand is below 22kW (nearly 30hp).
The system is also designed to recuperate energy quickly back into the battery at up to 25kW.
Pricing for the Mercedes-Benz GLA in Ireland will be announced closer to the car's market introduction later this year.
