Honestly, you turn your back for two minutes, and there's another BYD being launched. Last week it was the turn of the big Ti7 SUV, and this week it's another addition to BYD's aquatic-named lineup - meet the Dolphin-G.
Dolphin-Green? Dolphin-Government-Issue? Dolphin-Generic?

It could be any of those things. What we definitely know is that the Dolphin-G is a compact hatchback, about the same size as a VW Polo, and is aimed at buyers in that segment who want to move away from petrol power but aren't quite ready to go fully electric just yet.
So it's a hybrid, then?

Yes, but it's actually a plug-in hybrid, using BYD's clever DM-i PHEV setup, sometimes known as the 'Super Hybrid.' BYD hasn't issued full technical details for the Dolphin-G just yet, but it's likely to use the same DM-i system as the existing Atto2 compact crossover, which has a 1.5-litre petrol engine which is mostly there to act as a generator for the battery and electric motor.
The Atto2 DM-i has an EV range of only 40km, though, so it's possible that BYD might try to stretch that a bit, not least because the Chinese car-making giant claims that the Dolphin-G has a combined electric and petrol range of 1,000km.
When can I buy one?

Pretty soon. The Dolphin-G goes on pan-European sale in the coming weeks, and it's expected to be in Ireland later this year, by which time we'll know more about pricing and technical specifications.
Presumably, this will push BYD sales even higher?
Almost certainly so. BYD's Irish sales are already up a staggering 95 per cent so far this year (most propelled by the success of the Seal-U SUV) and up by 124 per cent across Europe, with the brand now hovering on the top-ten sales charts both here and across the Continent.
BYD's Executive Vice President Stella Li said: "The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with Dolphin G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era. By bringing long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features into an accessible compact vehicle, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe."
