EZO, the Irish EV charging company (neé EasyGo), has partnered with telecommunications firm Eir to develop 50 high-speed urban charging hubs across Ireland. The first of these has just opened in Walkinstown, in west Dublin.
How many cars can charge at this hub?
The Walkinstown site features three 200kW high-speed connections, part of EZO's plan to change the landscape of in-town car charging. "Unlike traditional single-point charging locations, the hubs are engineered as high-capacity urban charging destinations, providing multiple ultra-fast chargers in one place to reduce wait times and deliver a more convenient experience”, said EZO.
What's Eir's part in all of this?
EZO and Eir have worked together before, converting 109 public payphone kiosks into EV charging stations across 13 local authorities. These new urban fast-charging sites are built on some of Eir's existing urban sites. Eir CEO Oliver Loomes said: "We are pleased to progress our work with EZO, having already converted 109 former public payphone kiosks into modern EV charging stations. Our broadband and fibre networks virtually connect the people of Ireland, and this project represents a natural evolution of our commitment to nationwide connectivity. By transforming our network of buildings in urban areas into accessible EV charging points, we are extending that connection to people and communities on the ground. This collaboration will expand the accessibility of EV charging across Ireland, utilising eir-owned sites to deliver more sustainable infrastructure and helping drive environmental progress in a meaningful and practical way.”
Anything else?
EZO notes that there are now an estimated 196,000 electric cars on Irish roads, and that the public charging network is going to have to evolve dramatically in the coming years if it's going to match the demand for volts. EZO CEO Ollie Chatten said: "The EZO-eir partnership combines telecommunications infrastructure expertise with EV technology and operations capability, enabling rapid deployment of high-speed charging facilities in prime urban locations. The launch of our first dedicated EV charging hub is a pivotal moment for EZO and for Ireland's EV infrastructure. These hubs are about looking forward and delivering faster charging, better access and urban coverage at scale. As EV adoption continues to grow in Ireland, drivers need infrastructure that is designed for convenience and reliability. Our nationwide hub rollout will play a critical role in enabling that future.”
