There are still a few months before Jaguar reveals in full its eagerly awaited new car, a vehicle that has, until today, been referred to as an electric GT, or with its codename, X900. Its official name has now been made public, and it's called the Jaguar Type 01.
Walk us through the Type 01's name
"Type” naming first appeared on the 1951 Jaguar C-type and has been used ever since by the British brand, so there's a neat line drawn from the new car to the marque's considerable legacy.
The "0” refers to this new car's zero-emission status, as it is an EV. And "1” indicates that the Type 01 is the first model in Jaguar's so-called new era.
What do we know about the Jaguar Type 01?
Officially, Jaguar has confirmed that the Type 01 features three electric motors, delivering over 1,000hp and a crazy 1,300Nm of torque.
What it hasn't said, but what it is widely expected, is that the Type 01 will feature a large battery pack of about 120kWh capacity, enabling a range of around 700km.
And when will we see the production-ready car?
"Later this year” is as definitive as it gets from Jaguar at this point. Spectators at this coming weekend's Formula E race in Monaco will see the Type 01 wearing a new camouflage wrap, but it's expected to be September before the production-ready vehicle is unveiled in full.
