Peugeot is back at the Beijing motor show (Auto China 2026), and it's brought along two stunning concept cars that give us more than a hint of the future of the company's design efforts.

Hang on. Is that… an estate?

Sort of. This is the Peugeot Concept 6, and while we're all still mourning the demise of the slinky Peugeot 508, this concept might just be a hint that Peugeot has plans for something other than SUVs and hatchbacks.

In fact, the Concept 6 is a cross between a conventional saloon and a shoot-brake-style sleek estate. According to Peugeot, it is: "Elegant and sporty, modern and timeless. Concept 6 reflects a refined and emotional approach to design, showcasing French flair and a strong sense of proportion.”

Oh dear, there appears to be an SUV next to it…

Yes, but it's a rather handsome SUV, no? This is the Peugeot Concept 8, which is a big hint as to the style of the company's next-generation large SUVs. That means it will heavily influence the next 5008, and quite possibly a new, larger SUV to sit above the 5008 in the Peugeot lineup. Expect to see this new horizontal light design - a departure from the current vertical 'three-claw' look - on future models too, including the new 208 and 2008, which will be heavily based on the dramatic Polygon concept.

Is it significant that the cars are being shown in China?

It certainly is. Western car makers have had a bruising time of it in the Chinese car market of late, but Peugeot says that it's determined to stick things out, saying that: "With China as a key pillar of its strategy, the brand moves forward with confidence, drawing strength from its heritage while setting new standards for the future.”

Will there be production versions of these concepts?

Yes, almost certainly, but inevitably they will evolve and become a little more conventional on the road to production. Peugeot is making encouraging noises, though, about turning the Concept 6 and Concept 8 into ready-to-buy cars with the help of its Chinese partner Dongfeng.

"Beijing is a key stage for Peugeot today”, said Alain Favey, Peugeot's CEO. "This motor show is not only about showcasing plans for future products, it is about reaffirming our ambition. China is a major driver of our global transformation, particularly in electrification, innovation and brand elevation. Today we are showcasing two new concept cars which demonstrate our vision for a bold new future for the brand, combining feline French design and driving pleasure with world-leading electric and intelligent technologies, for China and for our global market.”
