It's been 20 years since the original Range Rover Sport was launched, and Land Rover is celebrating with a special Range Rover Sport Twenty Edition.

What makes this special edition, y'know, special?

First, let's take a quick trip through Range Rover Sport history. That original 2005 Range Rover Sport - inspired by the gorgeous, dramatic, butterfly-doored 'Range Stormer' concept - was based on the same 'T5' chassis as the Land Rover Discovery 3 and shared that car's V6 diesel engine, as well as a 4.4 petrol V8 and - something the Discovery never got - a supercharged V8.

The second-generation model was upgraded to the same all-aluminium structure as the 'full fat' Range Rover, something that was also copied by the third and fourth generations. All four Range Rover Sports mixed luxury, sharp high-speed on-road manners and the expected spectacular off-road performance.

Range Rover Sport sets Pikes Peak record time

Over the years, the Sport has set a number of records, including a production SUV record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the USA, and five years later became the first vehicle to drive up the 999 steps of Heaven's Gate in China, overcoming low-grip conditions and 45-degree inclines in an impressive showcase of traction, control and composure.

Range Rover’s desert challenge

In other feats, the Range Rover Sport set the fastest time on an 800km drive across the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia and, for the reveal of the third-generation car, defied a torrent of water to drive 193m up the Kárahnjúkar Dam in Iceland.

Then there's the mighty SV and SVR models with their ever-more powerful supercharged and later turbocharged V8s and... I could go on.

Yes, you could but we'd like to know about the Twenty Edition

For the Twenty Edition, you can choose from normal-person Santorini Black or Ostuni white paint finishes, or for the more discerning customer there's a bright Sanguinello Orange finish, which harks back to the 'Vesuvio Orange' of the original Range Stormer concept.

On the outside, there's a black trim pack with 'Twenty' etched into various panels and 23-inch alloy wheels in either Gloss Black or Gloss Sparkle Silver. As you open the door, there are treadplates etched with 'Twenty' and the same repeated on the centre console.

There's Windsor Ebony leather for the seats, which themselves are sculpted motorsport-style items, borrowed from the Range Rover Sport SV. You also get forged carbon-fibre trim, and a black suede-style headliner.

The Twenty Edition comes with the P550e plug-in-hybrid powertrain, which combines a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine with a 105kW electric motor and 38.2kWh battery to produce 550hp, with a pure-electric driving range of up to 114km and CO2 emissions from just 18g/km.

When can I have one in Ireland?

You can order a Range Rover Sport Twenty Edition from August, and the Irish price will be €155,000.

You said something about London Editions too?

Yes, earlier this year we reported on the special Range Rover Velar Belgravia and the Range Rover Evoque Hoxton editions, and we were told at the time that there would be more details to follow on special Range Rover Sport Battersea and Range Rover Westminster versions.

And now we have that information. Well, we have details for the Range Rover Sport Battersea - Battersea being one of the most fashionable of all areas of London these days, and home to the iconic power station (now converted into apartments and shops).

The Range Rover Sport Battersea gets a black contrast roof and black exterior pack, as well as black 22-inch forged wheels. Exclusive interior finishing includes 'Battersea Edition' etching on the centre console and treadplates and distinctive contrast stitching woven into the seats. The Irish price is €131,970.

We'll find out more about the full-size Range Rover Westminster Edition in a few weeks.
