MG is breaking into the seven-seat family car market for the first time with this, the new S9 SUV, a sleek-looking model that shares obvious styling cues with the slightly smaller - and very successful - MG HS.
Is the MG S9 electric?
Nope - unlike the similarly-named S5 and S6 models, the MGS9 gets a plug-in-hybrid setup, based on the same 1.5-litre petrol engine as found in the HS. This turbocharged engine is combined with an electric motor and a 24.7kWh battery.
MG says that it can cover 100km on a full charge of the battery, but hasn't yet confirmed its charging capability.
Is there much space inside?

We'll find out for certain when we test it, but the S9 is a seven-seater with the usual third-row seating that folds down into the boot floor. MG says that when all seven seats are in use, there's still a reasonable 332 litres of boot space left over - comparable with much bigger cars such as the Volvo XC90, and the big-selling Skoda Kodiaq - and the MG goes one better than the Skoda by mixing plug-in hybrid power with seats for seven. Fold all the back seats flat, and there's more than 1,000 litres of space.
What about equipment?

Irish prices and specs haven't been announced yet, but the MGS9 should come with the likes of leather-style upholstery, a large panoramic sunroof, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, plus tri-zone air conditioning. It'll be safe too - the S9 has already been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety score.
When can I buy one?
Soon; as the S9 goes on sale in the UK next month, Irish sales shouldn't be far behind.
