MG has introduced a new version of the hugely popular MG4 electric hatchback, in the shape of the MG4 Urban, which is set to go on sale in Ireland priced from around €24,000.
Is this just a stripped-out version of the existing MG4?
You might think it would be, but no - this new MG4 Urban really is an entirely new model, albeit with the same (or at least similar) badging, presumably designed to make it seem instantly familiar to existing customers.
What's different about it?
The new MG4 Urban is a front-wheel drive electric car, unlike the existing MG4, which is rear-wheel drive. Nonetheless, MG is promising that 'Driver Engagement' is one of the top three priorities for the car (alongside technology and quality), so, as with the MG4, we'd expect it to be pretty decent to drive.
Looks-wise, you can see the kinship to the existing MG4, but the MG4 Urban gets slightly curvier styling, with a hint of Ford Puma to it, which is clearly more closely aligned with the MG S5 and MG S6 SUVs.
MG hasn't issued any official dimensions for the MG4 Urban, but it's definitely a more compact model than the current MG4.
What kind of range does it have?
The entry-level model of the MG4 Urban will have a 43kWh battery pack, giving it a claimed range of 324km. It gets a 147hp electric motor driving the front wheels.
There will be an optional upgrade to a bigger 53.9kWh batter, with a 158hp electric motor (giving it a fractional faster 9.5 second 0-100km/h time) and a claimed range of 416km.
In the UK, at least, the MG4 Urban will be offered in Comfort Standard Range, Comfort Long Range and Premium Long Range trims, but Irish prices and equipment levels have yet to be announced, although a 15.6-inch touchscreen and adaptive cruise control are likely to come as standard.
What about the other MG4?
That's getting a series of updates for 2026, too, although aside from new headlights, there's not a lot of difference on the outside. Inside, there's said to be a significant boost in cabin quality, inspired no doubt by the relatively ritzy interior of the MG S5 EV. Mechanically, the MG4 EV will remain the same, although the big-battery 77kWh long-range model gets slightly more claimed range on the WLTP test, rising to 545km.
As before, both the MG4 EV and the new MG4 Urban will be covered by MG's seven-year warranty.
