You're looking at the most powerful Opel yet to be created, and you'll soon be able to drive it for yourself - at least in the digital world, as it's coming to the Gran Turismo 7 game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Tell me more

It may carry the name of the well-known supermini, but there's not a lot of Opel Corsa in this wild concept car. According to Opel, it previews future GSE models, but even the most optimistic fans will be cautious about expecting the brand to deliver an electric supercar.

The Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo - to use the full name - is the latest in a series of futuristic performance cars that have been created for the seminal driving simulation game of the same name.

Other past efforts include last year's Skoda Vision Gran Turismo and the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo, while Jaguar's Vision Gran Turismo SV and Peugeot's L500 R HYbrid Vision Gran Turismo have also featured in the game.

What's the performance like?

In keeping with the rather extreme nature of these Vision Gran Turismo cars, the Opel uses a dual-motor electric powertrain that's powered by an 82kWh battery with a 476hp (350kW) motor on each axle, giving it a combined maximum output of 800hp.

Acceleration is seriously rapid, with 0-100km/h taking a mere two seconds before the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo hits a top speed of 320km/h. The car is also equipped with a boost function to give drivers a further 80hp for up to four seconds for easier overtaking on track. Once that's used up, it can recharge in 80 seconds to go again.

Commenting at the car's unveiling, Opel CEO Florian Huettl said: “The Opel Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo takes our GSE sub-brand to the next level. It not only shows what is possible on a small car platform, it also displays a clear view to the future and appeals to all kinds of car enthusiasts. For the first time ever, an Opel concept can not only be admired from afar.”

Talk me through the design

Exact dimensions haven't been released for the car, but it's clear to see how much lower and wider it is than any regular Opel Corsa. The front features a new execution of the company's signature 'Vizor' grille that incorporates the headlights and is believed to be a hint as to how it will appear on future production models.

The Opel 'Blitz' logo is illuminated and sits within the signature Opel 'Compass'. Part of that extends through the bonnet, dividing the massive vent that channels air from the front spoiler over the windscreen.

A black roof contrasts against the white bodywork and at the rear there's a huge yellow roof spoiler and matching aerodynamic diffuser. We again see the Opel Compass detail in the rear light design that carries the Opel wordmark at the centre.

The wheels are aerodynamically optimised and feature a triangular design, with the 21-inch front wheels sporting black-and-yellow rims while the 22-inch rears get a different white-and-yellow colour scheme.

What about the interior?

It's every bit the electric racer of the future inside, with a stripped-back cabin that includes an exposed tubular roll cage and just one seat. The latter can barely be called a seat due to its radical design, but along with the six-point harness, it keeps the driver held well in place on the move.

As the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo uses a single-speed automatic transmission, there are only two pedals in the footwell, finished with a metallic look with a plus symbol on the accelerator and a minus symbol on the brake pedal.

The steering wheel is an oblong design that's as pared-back as the rest of the cabin, featuring yellow flashes that repeat the Opel Compass design seen throughout the car, along with buttons for the driving mode, boost function and traction control.

Opel's designers were keen to create a 'detoxed' interior, which does away with any of the usual screens in favour of a head-up display projected onto the windscreen. Other information appears through fabric materials that cover the dashboard and doors.

Is this just another sci-fi concept car, or is there more to it?

Well, besides creating a bit of hype and boosting the revitalisation of GSE as a performance sub-brand, reading between the lines we see Opel committing to a new generation of Corsa at a time when several other car makers are leaving the segment, and the talk of utilising the Stellantis 'STLA Small' platform architecture suggest that it be available with a choice of powertrain types and not exclusively electric.
