Range Rover is adding to its seemingly never-ending expanded portfolio of high-performance SV models with this, the new Range Rover Sport SV Carbon.

Let me guess. It uses lots of...

That's right - aluminium, because the Range Rover Sport is of course built with an entirely aluminium chassis and body. Oh, and this one gets lots of carbon-fibre trim, too.

Is any of that carbon-fibre trim functional?

Actually, yes. One of the Range Rover Sport SV Carbon's most striking features is an optional set of whopping great 23-inch wheels, which are in fact fully made from carbon fibre. As well as looking amazing, these wheels, according to Land Rover, make up to a 76kg weight saving. Forged alloy 23-inch rims come as standard.

Behind the wheels, there are massive brakes with anodised black calipers, but you can optionally have carbon-ceramic brakes with calipers finished in blue, yellow, bronze, or black.

So, this is a Range Rover Superleggera?

Not quite. The rest of the carbon-fibre add-ons are really just there for aesthetic purposes, so this remains a 2.5-tonne behemoth, even with the carbon additions. There's a choice of forged carbon-fibre, or carbon twill trim for all sorts of bits and pieces on the outside, including an exposed carbon-fibre bonnet and even carbon exhaust surrounds.

What about the inside?

As standard, there are perforated 'Windsor' leather seats in a choice of four colours, or you can optionally have a leather-free upholstery option made of a suede-like 'Ultrafabric'.

Needless to say, there's forged carbon fibre everywhere, including on the dash, doors and seat backs, along with 'Midnight' chrome trim and illuminated tread plates in the doors.

There's also Land Rover's new Body and Soul Seat (BASS) technology which pumps audio up through speakers in the seats for maximum musical immersion.

Any mechanical upgrades?

Not really, but then with a 635hp twin-turbo V8 engine (bought in from BMW) do you really need any? That mighty engine rumbles through a set of fully-active quad exhausts, and there's '6D' active hydraulic-interlinked air suspension with pitch and roll control to keep it all on the road, or to help you find traction and grip if you venture off-road. Mind the carbon rims if you do.

When can I buy one?

Soon enough. The Range Rover Sport SV Carbon will make its public debut in the 'Range Rover House' during Monterey Car Week on 13 August in the States.
