Department of Transport gets €24bn budget

Ireland's transport ministers are celebrating today as the Department of Transport was allocated a budget of €24.33 billion under the latest National Development Plan Review 2025.

Who's celebrating, exactly?

Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien, Minister of State with responsibility for International and Road Transport, Logistics, Rail and Ports, Seán Canney, and Minister of State with responsibility for Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer have all welcomed the allocation of new funds, and between them they're saying that the cash will be directed towards public transport, including the commencement of Metrolink construction; road networks and road safety, in order to protect and expand the road network; active travel and greenways, to support sustainable transport and climate goals; and support the electrification of road transport to meet climate goals.

Which projects are going to get the cash?

Well, aside from the aforementioned Metrolink, the Department says that key priorities will include the BusConnects Dublin network redesign, the purchase of a new DART fleet, and significant grant and infrastructural support for the move towards electric vehicles.

Commenting on the NDP Review, Minister O'Brien said: “The Department's allocation under the National Development Plan reflects this Government's unwavering commitment to delivering a modern, safe, and sustainable transport network for all, as well as protecting and expanding the road network. This funding will enable us to progress transformative projects like MetroLink, DART+, and BusConnects, while also strengthening regional connectivity and supporting rural mobility through initiatives such as Connecting Ireland. These investments are not just about infrastructure—they are about supporting communities, reducing emissions, and building a transport system that serves every corner of our country.”

Minister Canney said: “This €24.33 billion investment under the updated National Development Plan is about building a transport system that serves the entire country. Investment in roads, ports, and rail underpins economic resilience, regional opportunity, and climate action. As Minister with responsibility for rail, I remain firmly committed to progressing the All-Island Strategic Rail Review. It has the potential to reshape connectivity across the island and provide our regions with thelong-term transport links they need to thrive.”

What about transport in rural areas?

On rural transport, Minister Buttimer said: “I'm delighted the NDP Review recognises how critical local roads are to communities everywhere. Investment in this key infrastructure makes daily life easier for everyone by boosting connectivity, making daily commutes or school and sports runs safer and easier and, of course, supporting small businesses.”
