New high-speed EV charging hub opens in Bangor

ESB has opened a new high-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Lesley Bloomfield Shopping Centre in Bangor, adding more capacity to Northern Ireland's growing charging network.

The new hub features three 200kW high-powered chargers that can charge up to six electric vehicles at the same time. Depending on the vehicle, you could get about 100 kilometres of range in just six minutes at these new chargers. They also support tap-and-go payments, so there's no need to sign up or download an app.

Located on the Bangor Ring Road, Lesley Bloomfield Shopping Centre is a retail destination with more than 60 shops and restaurants and around four million visitors each year. It has been home to EV chargers since 2012, and this latest upgrade brings faster, more reliable charging to one of Ards and North Down's most visited shopping areas. The site is also close to popular local attractions, including Brompton Bay, Groomsport Harbour and the North Down Coastal Path.

Francis O'Donnell, Head of eMobility at ESB, said the new hub is part of the company's wider effort to modernise and expand the public EV charging network in Northern Ireland. "We are dedicated to driving the adoption of electric vehicles by providing charging solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers," he said.

Jamie Bill, Centre Manager at Lesley Bloomfield, added that the shopping centre was one of the first in the region to install public EV chargers more than a decade ago. "We are delighted to once again be at the leading edge of this technology with the introduction of these high power chargers which we know our existing customers will love and will attract new visitors to the scheme”, he said.

ESB operates the largest public EV charging network across the island of Ireland, with over 1,600 charge points in place. The company plans to continue rolling out high-speed chargers at key locations to support the growing number of EVs on the road.
