Opel has confirmed that it's going to launch a high-performance Mokka GSE, as it seeks to rebuild the classic GSE badge as an electric performance sub-brand.

What kind of performance are we talking about?

The hot Mokka GSE will get a 280hp electric motor, with 345Nm of torque, driving the front wheels. Performance figures haven't been announced yet.

That sounds… familiar…

It should do. Because Opel shares its Mokka platform with the rest of the Stellantis Group, we've already seen this 280hp electric powertrain in the likes of the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce and the Abarth 600e, plus it's also coming soon in the new Peugeot E-208 GTI.

How is Opel going to make the Mokka GSE feel special?

Good question. We're assuming at this point that the Mokka GSE will get the same limited slip differential for the front axle, which should make it feel pretty pointy in corners, and the same 54kWh battery pack, which should result in a range of around 300km.

To separate it out from its Stellantis Group peers, Opel says that the road-going Mokka GSE has been heavily influenced by the experimental rally version.

That rallying Mokka GSE has already seen action on the ELE rally in the Netherlands, and Opel claims that the road-going model will benefit from direct rallying experience.

“During the development of the Opel Mokka GSE Rally, it quickly became clear to us that we did not want to reserve this incredible feeling only for motorsport professionals. Opel customers should also be able to enjoy this particularly powerful, direct and uncompromising driving experience. That is why we are putting the Mokka GSE into series production," said Opel Vice President Current Product Marc Fetzer.

So it'll have a whammy-bar handbrake and a roll-cage?

Probably not, no. But Opel does say that it wants to preserve the 'direct feeling' that you'd get in the rallying version, as well as the sensation that the car 'sticks to the road.' The Mokka GSE rally car is also set to compete in the Rallye Vosges Grand-Est in France, and Opel says that 'these experiences will be incorporated into the series version of the Mokka GSE.' At the very least, you can expect a matte-black bonnet and bright yellow brake calipers.

"The Mokka GSE Rally marks an incredible leap in electric rallying. The power and the precise handling are brilliant - it's great fun from the very first second," said Calle Carlberg. The champion of the 2023 ADAC Opel Electric Cup is also the Mokka GSE's test driver, so he probably knows of where he speaks: “I think it's fantastic that Opel is now translating the prototype into series production as the Mokka GSE and making this driving experience possible for all Opel customers.”

When can I buy a Mokka GSE?

We're not sure yet as Opel hasn't given the car an official release date, but the German car maker has said that more details, and undisguised photos, of the Mokka GSE will be released soon.
