Apply now for EV taxi grant, says Toyota Ireland

Toyota reckons that Ireland's taxi operators and drivers should run, not walk, to their computers and get applying for the latest round of SPSV grants for electric taxis.

What's the SPSV grant?

The Small Public Service Vehicle grant, which is technically the Electric Small Public Service Vehicle (or eSPSV25 to give it its full and correct acronym), is a Government grant that defers much of the cost of buying a fully-electric car for taxi services. The grant re-opens for applications today, Monday the 23rd of June, and you'll need to be quick if you want to avail of it, as the programme regularly hits its funding limits very soon after applications open.

How much is the grant?

The grant currently has €5 million to disburse, and it can offer eligible taxi drivers and operators up to €20,000, or €25,000 for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, off the cost of a new electric car. To qualify, you'll need to be scrapping an older combustion-engined vehicle.

What do I need to apply?

You'll need a taxi licence, obviously, and you'll also need an older combustion model between three and ten years old, or with at least 300,000km on the clock, as documented by the NCT. That car will have to be scrapped, and a Certificate of Destruction must be issued from an official End of Life Vehicles Authorised Treatment Facility.

What about the Toyota?

If you meet the criteria, then Toyota reckons that a bZ4X makes an ideal taxi, and the grant brings its price down to just €22,950. According to Toyota Ireland, the bZ4X has: “a WLTP range of up to 505km, [and] is engineered to meet the demanding daily requirements of taxi drivers, ensuring ample range for multiple fares and long shifts without the need to charge. The efficient battery technology and rapid charging capabilities mean less downtime and more time on the road. Plus, for added peace of mind, the Toyota bZ4X is backed with a 15 year or 1,000,000 Km battery extended care program from Toyota.”
